Midjourney full body command tips & examples

Generative AI has opened new frontiers in visual design, enabling creators to translate their textual prompts into detailed images. Among the leaders in this cutting-edge domain is Midjourney, a text-to-image generative AI that has left many in awe with its capabilities. However, as with any advanced tool, knowing how to wield it can make all the difference.

One challenge many users face with Midjourney is procuring a complete, ‘full body’ depiction of characters. More often than not, results yield half or partial character images, leaving users puzzling over how to secure that perfect full body shot. If you’re among those seeking the magic phrase to coax Midjourney into generating comprehensive visuals, you’re in for a treat!

In this article, we tackle the “Midjourney full body command” — a set of strategies and tips to guide Midjourney into crafting the exact images you envision. From the secret sauce of starting your prompt with ‘full body shot’ to the nuanced approach of adjusting aspect ratios, we’ve got you covered.

Want to see these techniques in action? We’ll also be showcasing a few example prompts, embodying the guidelines discussed, to set you on a journey of impeccable image generation with Midjourney.

Tips for full body character shot prompts

When working with MIdjourney, it’s crucial to give precise instructions to achieve desired results. If the aim is to generate full body images of characters, I have found that specific cues in the prompt can make a substantial difference. Here are some tips to construct effective prompts that result in full body shots:

Explicit mention

I have discovered that starting your prompt with the phrase ‘full body shot’ can set a clear expectation for Midjourney right from the beginning. This direct approach leaves little room for ambiguity.

Simplicity is key

I have discovered that a concise and unambiguous prompt is often more effective. Midjourney  is less likely to get “distracted” by irrelevant details or try to prioritise one detail over another.

Describe the feet

An explicit mention or description of the character’s feet or shoes can cue Midjourney to generate the lower half of the body. For instance, “full body shot of a man wearing red sneakers” is more likely to produce a full body image than just “man wearing sneakers.”

Mention lower body details

Similarly, mentioning clothing or features specific to the lower half of the body can act as a trigger. Descriptions like “long flowing skirt” or “ripped jeans” help in emphasising the full length of the character.

Aspect ratio

Altering the aspect ratio to a more vertical orientation is a clever way to guide the model. This can implicitly suggest that the canvas should accommodate the entire height of the character. For example a vertical ratio like –ar 3:6 seems to work well for me.

Avoid clutter

Minimise the inclusion of too many elements or background details. If Midjourney needs to focus on generating multiple items, it will likely prioritise one over the other and compromise on the full body shot.

Iterative feedback

If the output isn’t perfect, tweak the prompt by adding or removing details. Some trial and error can lead to better understanding of how Midjourney responds to variations in the prompt.

Use examples

Sometimes, it helps to provide an example within the prompt. For instance, “Like a fashion magazine cover, full body shot of a woman in a blue dress.”

Referencing position

Statements like “standing tall” or “walking forward” can emphasise the full stature of the character and encourage the model to produce images where the full body is visible.

Avoid ambiguities

If a detail can be interpreted in multiple ways, the model might prioritise the interpretation that doesn’t align with the desired full body image. Always aim to be as specific as possible.

These prompts are designed based on the guidelines I discussed at the beginning of this article, aiming to lead Midjourney to generate full body shots. They can be modified based on specific requirements and used as a starting point for further fine-tuning.
