Crafting the perfect Midjourney portrait prompt is a combination of clarity, creativity, and precision. A good prompt should inspire while providing a clear direction to envision and capture the desired image.
How to construct a portrait prompt
Here’s a method to construct an effective portrait prompt:
Determine your objective
- What emotion, theme, or concept do you want the portrait to convey?
- Examples: emotion (happiness, sorrow), theme (vintage, futuristic), or concept (freedom, confinement).
Choose the subject
- Define the main subject of the portrait.
- Examples: A child, an elderly person, a dancer, etc.
Detail the facial expression or feature
- Be specific about the facial emotion or characteristics you want emphasized.
- Examples: furrowed brows, wide-eyed wonder, a playful smirk, deep-set wrinkles.
Setting & environment
- Describe the background or environment, if it’s crucial to the portrait.
- Examples: amidst a bustling market, against a stark white backdrop, within a dimly lit room.
Props and attire
- If relevant, mention any specific props or clothing that should be part of the portrait.
- Examples: holding a vintage camera, wearing a feathered hat, draped in a silk robe.
Technical specifications
- If you have a specific vision, mention the desired camera angle, lighting condition, or even camera equipment.
- Examples: shot from a low angle, during golden hour, using a wide-aperture lens. In the examples below I like to use camera models and lenses for a more authentic result.
Tone & mood
- Add adjectives or descriptors that set the mood for the photograph.
- Examples: ethereal, gritty, vibrant, solemn.
Review & refine
- Read your prompt. Does it provide a clear direction? Is it too restrictive or too vague? Adjust as needed.
- It’s essential that while being descriptive, you leave room for the Midjourney’s bot interpretation and creativity.
Feedback loop
Share the prompt with a photographer or friend. Their understanding or queries can provide insight into any adjustments needed.
Example
Objective: Convey nostalgia and the passage of time.
Prompt: “Capture a portrait of an elderly woman, her deep-set wrinkles telling tales of the decades gone by. She should be wearing a vintage locket, a family heirloom. Her eyes, misty with memories, look past the camera, lost in the days of her youth. This should be shot in soft, diffused light, highlighting the textures of her skin and the glint of her locket.”
By following this method, you’ll be well on your way to creating compelling and effective Midjourney portrait prompts.
