How to prompt Midjourney to create your own avatar

In this article, we’ll guide you on crafting your personalised avatar on Midjourney using a selfy. Are you aware that you can submit your own image to Midjourney, which can then be transformed into various avatars exhibiting diverse styles and environments? Just arm yourself with a snapshot, a touch of creativity, and a little bit of time, and you’re good to go.

The subsequent guide outlines the steps to upload your personal photograph to Midjourney and begin triggering the platform to craft images based on your appearance. I’ll demonstrate several examples, but treat these as mere launch pads for your unique avatar prompts.

Step one – Uploading your own photo to discord

To begin with, it’s necessary to upload a photo of yourself to Discord. The purpose of this step is to secure a Discord URL for your self-taken photo. So get your camera ready and proceed with this step once you have a photo you’re satisfied with.

Screenshot of how to upload a file to discord
  1. Click the ‘+’ icon in the discord chat bar
  2. Then click the ‘Upload a File’ option
  3. This will let you select your photo from wherever you stored it
  4. Once your photo is uploaded click the image and open in a new browser window.
  5. Right click the image and select ‘Copy image address’ or similar depending on browser.
  6. Save your image URL somewhere so that you can easily retrieve it when needed.

Step two – Writing a Midjourney prompt to create your first avatar

The following is a simple prompt you can start with:

/imagine: turn this [insert URL from step one] into an avatar

Example of results using my own photo:

Result using the example prompt from above:

These results were not bad, even though Midjourney decided to give my avatar hair lol. But nothing that could be refined with a bit more prompting.

So I used the same simple prompt again, but this time I added the instruction to make sure the avatar remains bald. The results were far better at a likeness:

Example prompts to develop your avatar

When you’re content with your initial avatar, you can revisit the first step, but this time, use the avatar you’ve selected as the basis. The example prompts provided below can serve as motivation and direction for you.

The avatar image I selected as my base image is this one:

Simple prompt to add a hat

/imagine: [URL of chosen avatar image] wearing a Christmas hat

Simple prompt to turn avatar into a cute creature

/imagine: [URL of chosen avatar image] as a cute creature

Simple prompt to create a scene

/imagine: [URL of chosen avatar image] [Scene]

For this example I decided to give my avatar fancy clothes and a horse.

Conclusion

As demonstrated by the straightforward examples I’ve provided, the possibilities are boundless when it comes to crafting your ideal avatar. Simply expand upon the prompts I’ve utilised to spark your creativity and enable Midjourney to generate a unique avatar that both you and others will appreciate.

Happy avatar prompting!
